Screen time isn’t the problem. Passive screens are.

If you have been counting minutes and feeling like you are losing, here is the reassuring part first: the number you have been counting is one of the weakest predictors in this whole field. The thing that matters is easier to see and easier to change.

The number that should calm you down

In 2019 two Oxford researchers did something unusual. Instead of running one more small study, they took three enormous datasets — around 355,000 young people between them — and asked how much of the variation in wellbeing screen use could actually account for.

The answer was about 0.4%. Not 40%. Not 4%. Less than half of one percent. In the same analysis, wearing glasses and eating potatoes sat in a comparable range, while sleeping properly and eating breakfast mattered several times more.

Each square is one percent of everything that moves a young person’s wellbeing — family, sleep, friendships, school, health, money, temperament. Screen use is the marked one. Everything grey is the rest of their life, and that is where the leverage is.

So where does the harm come from? Mostly from what gets pushed out

A day has 24 hours in it and no more. That constraint, not the device, does most of the damage people attribute to screens. An hour of screen is only ever an hour of something else — and the something else is what the evidence keeps pointing at.

A clock cannot tell the difference between a child being played at and a child working something out. That difference is nearly everything.

The same 30 minutes, doing opposite things

Here is what a clock cannot see. Thirty minutes of a child being played at, and thirty minutes of a child making something and then telling you why it works, are not the same activity. They are close to opposites.

The mechanism is not mysterious. Learning sticks when a child produces something — a prediction, a decision, an explanation — rather than receives it. It is the same reason the lesson you had to teach someone else is the one you still remember.

The 10-second test at the door

You do not need software to audit this and you do not need to hover. Three questions, asked lightly, in the doorway. Two clear answers out of three is a good screen.

Ask
“What were you trying to do?”

A goal in their own words means they were steering. The name of an app is not a goal.

Ask
“Did anything go wrong?”

A stuck moment they can describe is the clearest sign that thinking happened. Frictionless is the warning sign, not the goal.

Then
“Show me?”

If they can teach it back to you, they own it. This is also the cheapest way to double the value of any screen you already allow.

Move the last stretch before bed off screens

Not because screens are evil, but because sleep is the one link in this literature that keeps showing up. Highest-value change available to most families, and it costs nothing.

Trade 10 watching minutes for 10 explaining minutes

Same total on the clock, completely different work. Ask them to talk you through the thing they just built, and to say why their approach worked.

Let them be wrong about 2 things in 10

A child who gets everything right is being handed things they already knew. Around 8 right out of 10 keeps work interesting without turning into “I’m bad at this”.

Questions parents actually search for

How much screen time is OK for a 7-year-old?

There is no evidence-backed magic number for school-age children, and the American Academy of Pediatrics stopped publishing one for over-5s. It asks families to protect four things first: sleep, physical activity, school work and time together. If those are intact, what remains matters far less than what the child is doing with it.

Is “educational” screen time actually better?

Sometimes, but the label on the app is the wrong thing to read. The useful test is whether your child is producing or receiving — deciding, predicting, building, explaining — versus being played at. A plain puzzle that makes them think beats a polished app that thinks for them.

Does screen time affect children’s sleep?

This is the strongest and most consistent link in the field. A review of 67 studies of school-age children and adolescents found the large majority reported screen use associated with later bedtimes and less sleep. If you change one thing, change the last stretch before bed.

Is any of this proven, or just correlation?

Mostly correlation, and we would rather say so. The screen-time findings are associations from self-reported data. The teaching findings — that reasoning improves when taught directly — come from controlled trials pooled across 90 studies, which is stronger, though those same reviews found short programmes fade.
