Everything is a thing you can pick up

Reasoning is physical and concrete. They sort, notice and name. Abstract instructions slide off; a pile of objects does not.

Prediction arrives

They start saying what will happen before it happens — the first sign of a rule being held in mind rather than discovered by accident.

“But why?” gets teeth

Not the toddler’s endless why. This one is a test: they are checking whether your rule survives a counter-example they have thought of.

They can hold two accounts that disagree and ask which to trust. This is where critical thinking becomes possible rather than performed.

The win at this age is transfer: using an approach that worked on one problem on something that looks nothing like it.

What is actually growing

It is tempting to think children get smarter by learning more. Mostly, in this window, they get smarter by being able to keep more in play at once — holding a goal, a rule and a half-finished idea in mind while they check it.

That capacity is the bottleneck on reasoning. It is also why a question that seems trivially easy to you can be genuinely hard for a 7-year-old: not because the logic is beyond them, but because there are too many pieces to hold.

Illustrative, and deliberately rough: working-memory span grows steadily through childhood and estimates differ by task and measure. Caveat: adult capacity is famously modest too — the difference is what an adult can chunk together into one piece.
Children in this window do not mostly get smarter by learning more. They get smarter by being able to hold more in play at once.

How to use this at home

If they are stuck, remove a piece

Take one variable out rather than explaining harder. A 6-year-old who cannot solve it with three things in play often solves it instantly with two.

Ask for the rule, not the answer

“What is the pattern?” is a question about their reasoning. “What comes next?” is a question about their luck.

From 9, put two sources in front of them

Two people who disagree about something harmless. Ask who they believe and why. That is the whole skill in one conversation.

None of this needs a curriculum, and it is not a diagnostic. If something about your child’s development genuinely worries you, that is a conversation for a professional who can see them — not for an article.

Questions parents actually search for

At what age can children think critically?

In a real sense, around 9 to 10, when most children can hold two conflicting accounts in mind and weigh them. The building blocks — noticing, predicting, testing a rule — are trainable from 6, and they are what makes the later skill possible.

Is the concrete operational stage still accepted?

Broadly, the sequence Piaget described holds up: children move from concrete, physical reasoning toward abstraction across roughly 7 to 11. What has not held up is the strictness — development is more gradual and more task-dependent than his stage boundaries implied.

Why does my 7-year-old struggle with something that seems easy?

Usually because of how many things the problem asks them to hold at once, not because the logic is beyond them. Remove one element and the same child often solves it immediately.

Can I speed this up?

You can support it; you cannot fast-forward it. Reasoning skills respond to direct teaching between 4 and 12, but the evidence is for steadier practice over years rather than for intensive bursts, whose gains tend to fade.
