Sleep is the study skill nobody assigns

If you could add one thing to a child’s week that improved their reasoning, their mood and their memory at once, you would pay for it. It is free, most families are slightly short of it, and it is the least glamorous advice in this Notebook.

How much, actually

The consensus recommendation for 6- to 12-year-olds is 9 to 12 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, regularly. The word doing the work in that sentence is regularly: a consistent schedule matters roughly as much as the total.

Why it shows up in thinking, not just mood

Sleep is not downtime for a learning brain. It is when the day’s new material is consolidated and stabilised — which is why a night of short sleep costs some of what was learned the day before, not just alertness the day after.

Not because of blue light alone — because of what a screen does to arousal and to the decision to stop. The 67-study review is about bedtimes, not wavelengths.

Predictable sequences end negotiation. A child who knows exactly what comes next argues less about all of it.

Bring the difficult conversation forward

Whatever needs discussing — the wrong answer, the bad day at school — do it at dinner, not at 9pm. The thinking is better and the sleep survives.
